Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Many mothers are utilizing chiropractic care during pregnancy, but the reasons may surprise you!

Chiropractic care can help ensure proper spinal biomechanics of the entire spine throughout pregnancy.

Chiropractic adjustments to the pelvis and lumbar spine can help reduce mechanical stress caused by weight gain and changes in weight distribution associated with advancing pregnancy.    That’s not too surprising.   However, ensuring  proper spinal biomechanics of the entire spine throughout pregnancy in turn promotes optimum  nervous system function during labour and delivery….a definite advantage to a labouring mom!   That’s not too surprising when you think about it.   But less understood and surprising to most is the connection between the mother’s nerve system and that of the baby.

The Webster Technique

The developing baby depends on the maternal nervous system for its own well-being, right up until birth.  This is the neurological basis for the Webster Technique.   Developed by Dr. Larry Webster, Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment.  The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of subluxation and/or sacroiliac dysfunction.  In so doing neurobiomechanical function in the sacral/pelvic region is improved.  Sacral subluxation may contribute to a difficult labour for the mother (dystocia).  Primary causes of dystocia include uterine nerve interference, pelvic misalignment and the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments.  The resulting tense muscles and ligaments and their aberrant effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth.   Therefore, the correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia.    Webster technique is very safe, gentle and non-invasive, and has been successfully utilized by chiropractors worldwide for decades.

Our Doctors are Certified in Webster Technique

Chiropractors influence nerve system function for both mother and baby with each adjustment, so both can be as healthy as possible throughout all phases of pregnancy, labour, and delivery. Dr. Owens has completed post-graduate studies and certification in chiropractic pediatrics and maternal care and is certified in Webster Technique. So you will see a lot of expectant moms and babies enjoying the benefits of regular adjustments at Core Chiropractic!
